Just to let you know, he is wearing pants. It’s just that he walks around half-naked for the bulk of the film. That reminds me…my first nude drawing experience was slightly scarring.

It was about 2 weeks into first semester of year one university for me. The nude model walked in with a bathrobe. I didn’t want to draw him. I’d never seen a naked guy in my life, and starting out with an older man who was slightly chubby…well, that didn’t help.

We set up our mules (contraptions where you sit and prop up your drawing board). My prof directed the model how to stand: up on the dias at the front of the room, putting weight on one side of the body. I averted my eyes.

Then the prof told the model, “Please look directly at…Eunice. Your name’s Eunice, right?” He looked at me.

“Y-yes…” I said and turned bright red (according to my friend).

So. My first nude model drawing–first nude man, for that matter–was a rather startling experience for me. However, as disturbing as measuring someone’s proportions is, the human body is so fascinating. In a non-creepy way, of course. It’s so challenging and so organic. The essence of humanity is stored in that mass of muscle and who-knows-what.

The topic of abortion loves to float around, especially on university campus. At my university, there are frequent displays where pro-lifers show aborted babies, tangled in a mess like corpses in Holocaust photos. It’s heart-wrenching and scary.

I get frustrated with people who say abortion is acceptable. Pro-life IS Pro-choice. You chose to have sex. You were aware of the consequences. I’ll refrain from mentioning rape victims and other pro-life arguments because what I’m focussing on is not so much abortion itself, but on the negligence of my generation.

Hiding behind Pro Choice is an excuse so people don’t have to face the music. I think that many Pro-Choicers defend their views because they’re freaked about possibly having to face the consequences of promiscuous behavior. I purposefully refrain from “all”, because that would be a generalization.

It’s sad because I do see a generation of brilliant people who genuinely desire positive world change. We participate in green campaigns, we go overseas to help impoverished children, we shovel the elderly citizens’ driveways. On the other hand, we drive drunk, we mock those we see as inferior, we take pictures of dilapidated huts to brag about how we’re saving the world.

We are a generation of responsibility and irresponsibility. We don’t know what we want. Lots of the times we want what we shouldn’t, me included. It’s heart-wrenching and scary.

So there you have it from your 56% left-brainer. Which is strange. Because most people probably think I’m a right-brained thinker (the creative side), but I do adore my schedules and lists and planning. Don’t get me wrong–I also love drawing, writing, and other artsy pursuits.
